Seven Tips for Your Autumn Wardrobe

As the long bright days of summer give way to a crisp, refreshing fall, the styles are changing with the leaves around us. Autumn is arguably the finest season of the four in many ways, fashion being just one of them. Take a nod from nature and weave the rich, vibrant colors of the season into your wardrobe. Gather inspiration from the golden tones of harvest, deep shades of ripened fruit, and the vivid foliage carpeting the ground.

Begin by building a good base for every outfit with a quality undershirt and leggings. This will allow you to keep wearing some of your favorite items from the previous seasons as the days get chillier. And don’t pack away your favorite tee from summer just yet! Pair it with a casual flannel shirt, cozy cardigan or even a dressy blazer for lightweight and carefree layering. Add interest to your wardrobe with colored or patterned leggings that blend well with the pieces you already have.

Tights are probably one of the most underrated cold-weather accessories and have made quite a comeback in the fashion world. In situations where leggings might be too casual for the occasion or too bulky for a delicate dress or skirt, tights come to the rescue! They won’t detract from a dressy pair of flats or ankle boots and they add the perfect amount of coverage and warmth for cooler weather. Best of all, they don’t only come in black! Tights are an excellent way to add subtle textures and patterns to your outfit without over doing it.

Button-down shirts will be your best friend as the weather changes. Wear them casually over a graphic tee, tucked in for an outdoorsy New England vibe or layered under a pullover sweater. On milder days, keep an extra layer handy and tie one around your waist. Bold plaids, cozy flannels, or neutral solids are just a few of the many options available. Find a few favorites and take advantage of the many ways they can be worn.

Casual cardigans in neutral colors are essential as the day gets colder. Cardigans can be found in short and duster lengths and vary from very thin to bulky. They can be layered with a button-down shirt, worn over a basic top or dress, or cinched in at your natural waist with a leather belt. Cardigans are both fashionable and budget friendly making them an excellent go to piece for a fall wardrobe.

Denim is also a fall fashion staple. Chambray shirts, jean jackets, denim skirts or overalls are all excellent building blocks for a practical autumn wardrobe. Take your favorite short denim skirt beyond the warmer months by wearing it with leggings or boots. Pair darker washes with a light-colored top to lighten up your outfit or wear denim on denim for a retro fall vibe.

Kick your fall fashion up a notch and invest in some quality boots! From ankle boots in neutral tones to tall riding boots there are no end of options for every occasion. Most boots pair well with a variety of skirts or dresses, making it easy to transition your favorite pieces into fall. Put your best foot forward and compliment a simple pair of boots with cozy boot socks for added warmth and style.

Finally tie everything together with an elegant scarf. Scarves come in a wide range of textures, lengths and weights and are excellent transitional pieces.  They are one of the most versatile pieces in your wardrobe and can be used for warmth or as an accessory. Knot, wrap, and fold these adaptable squares of fabric into something that works for you! If you like the look of a blanket scarf but don’t care for the bulk, fold the scarf around itself until it is a long, skinny rectangle then drape around your shoulders and belt it at your natural waistline for a vest. This is just one of the many ways you can get creative with scarf-tying. Pinterest is an excellent resource for tutorials!

The days between the heat of summer and the chilly winter winds are perfect for curating tasteful and elegant outfits that reflect the change in the air. Take advantage of the milder days and cool nights as you pull out your favorite pieces from seasons past and add new articles to your wardrobe. Look for items that compliment you and can be worn with more than one outfit and don’t be afraid to mix patterns and textures. With good basics there are endless options to the outfits you can create for this season.
