Preparing For A New Year
by Brittany Velasquez
The beginning of a new year can be exhilarating, a blank slate waiting to be filled with new opportunities and experiences. For many people this is a time to think about accomplishing new goals. Whether those goals are mentally filed away or physically written on paper, it can be fun to challenge oneself to accomplish something new.
As many of us know, choosing the goals is the easy part. The challenge is to follow through and actually complete what we set out to do. Below are a few tips to help you reach your goals for 2019.
Think small. Too often we look at the big picture and set a lofty goal that is almost impossible to achieve. It seems easy to say that we will exercise every day of the week, but in reality that may not be possible. Instead, set smaller goals. The challenge could be to work out every day for a week. Once that goal is met, then set the same goal for the following week. A sense of accomplishment will follow as each of the smaller goals are achieved, rather then burning out from looking at the big picture.
Find accountability. Sometimes completing a goal takes the work of two people. Find someone that you trust, then ask that person to hold you accountable as you strive to complete your task. My best friend and I challenged each other to wake up early every morning for part of a week to work out. Believe me, knowing that she was going to text me to make sure I held up my end of the deal motivated me to roll out of bed first thing in the morning.
Find the right tools. Many times the proper tools can be a huge benefit in accomplishing our yearly to-do list. Invest in a nice planner where you can write down daily and weekly goals, plus plan out your week using the calendar. Splurge on a set of pens to take notes as you do your personal Bible study. Purchase that gym membership to help you reach your exercise goals. Whatever your goals may be, be sure to have the proper tools on hand.
Spend time in the Word. Nothing is complete without time in God’s Word. Fortify yourself with time spent with Him. Consistent Bible study will prepare and help you in every aspect of life, even when it comes to your yearly goals list. Check out this blog post for lots of Bible study helps.
Whether you choose to set goals for 2019 or not, remember this encouraging word from the Apostle Paul. “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” Philippians 4:13 (NKJV). As the daughter of the Heavenly Father you are equipped to accomplish your goals through His strength.
Have a blessed New Year!
